Shortly after traveling to Italy for the first time in 2018, Robert returned to Bangkok to visit family in his father’s native Thailand. Suddenly the familiar street benches, public park chess tables, and three-legged stools of Bangkok were seen with fresh eyes: this was Thai Terrazzo. A technique invented by the Italians was newly recognizable in this everyday, un-precious Thai street furniture. Here, it was colorful and haphazard, occasionally crumbling under the weight and weather of a tropical climate. Robert’s realization was in the universality of the technique - to salvage the waste product of the stone industry and transform it into something utilitarian yet beautiful.

Upon returning to his Brooklyn studio, Robert set out to continue designing within this tradition. Naturally his inclination was to find a way to use the defective and scratched mirror leftover from the production of his popular Gem and Volume Mirror collections. By casting these large panes of colored and antique mirror into the rustic shapes of the original Bangkok benches and tables, Robert has added a colorful and reflective wrinkle to this centuries-old technique. Instantly recognizable as carrying on the terrazzo tradition, the Mirazzo Collection begs the question of what other salvaged ingredients can be brought into the fold as the design and manufacturing industries evolve to waste as little raw material as possible.

The original design of the Torus Table was all about incorporating Microsuede - a heavily textured material - in an unusual context. The aim was to encourage the act of touch in our digital world. With this new edition of the Torus design Robert has achieved a similar level of warmth and tactility through the formal elements of the wood structure itself. 

Returning to his roots as a woodworker, Robert employed an esoteric process wherein each stave of the table is scalloped by running it over the table saw at an oblique angle. The staves are then coopered to create a structure suggestive of a Doric column. The Coved Torus table is offered in 2 glass options - Bronze or Fluted Peach, with the latter creating a striking moire effect as it interacts with the vertical lines of the base.

As of May, 2024, the Volume Mirror is currently discontinued as I have moved to Thailand to start my new furniture company Pern Baan.

The Volume Mirror continues my fascination with 3-dimensional, reflective surfaces. Most often featured as a pair, these convex mirrors can be hung individually, in groups, and at numerous angles.

The Tetrahedron Table is a nod to classical mathematics. We incorporated the Truncated Tetrahedron - a Platonic solid and perfect form, as a pedestal base. This dining table version explores the subtraction of volume and the notion that the edges of a form alone can render it with great clarity.

The Cyc Mirror draws inspiration from Robert's background in photography. The 'Cyc' - or 'Cyclorama' - is the iconic curved wall frequently used as backdrop for studio photography. With this design, he has played with the elemental swoop shape to create a mirror that seems to flow into infinity. To execute this design, Robert worked closely with Flickinger Glassworks, his Red Hook studio neighbor and the only small scale custom glass bending shop remaining on the East Coast.

Custom Reception Desk designed and built for Etsy's new Headquarters in Dumbo. The facade of the desk is comprised of over one hundred custom mitered ribs of solid walnut that create a parametric effect.

The Gibbous Coffee table is built in bent plywood, veneer, and solid surface. The smaller table is nesting and rotatable, allowing the user an endless number of configurations.

The Knockdown Shelving unit is built in solid Ash and finished with a low-VOC water based topcoat. Custom colors are available. The unit disassembles via a bolt system for easy packaging and shipping.

A custom version of the original Knockdown Shelving unit.

This 3-tiered version is 30" tall x 11 ft. long. Pictured in Ash with a deep purple topcoat.

Comprising nearly 100 individual tiles of wood, the Patchwork Bed references a quilted surface. Custom designed for a client who admired Mondrian, the multi-toned and figured headboard makes a graphic statement. Pictured in King.

For 2017 the Gibbous Table has been updated with a bold new color combination. A V-groove physically separates the wood from the solid surface, allowing for the application of a deep pigmented lacquer. Traveling vertically and along the circumference of the table, the groove adds an additional graphic element to this geometric table.

The Dichroic Edge series of Volume Mirror's evokes the atmospheric quality of reflective surfaces. As the viewer approaches these geometric mirrors from varying vantage points they are surprised by fleeting bursts of color that radiate through the iridescent edge and form a glowing halo around reflections.

From an oblique angle the kaleidoscopic hues repeat with a Flavin-like effect - step away, and the shimmering colors all but disappear. These playful pieces challenge the viewer to search for the obscure, rewarding them with surprising lines of luminosity and color.

Located at 1 World Trade Center, this custom designed desk pushes the original Parametric Desk into the curved realm.

Comprised of over 100 individually lacquered ribs anchored across a curved facade, it references the iconic World Trade Center Oculus which can be seen from the office windows.

Unlike the original Parametric Desk, this version incorporates a seamless door to close off the space from all angles.

The 'Carrara' planter is a marbleized hexagonal prism constructed of wood. Pictured with sanseviria plant.

The Suspension Lounge chair is constructed of solid and laminated walnut. 

In 2015 our studio was one of a handful of Brooklyn based furniture makers contracted by Etsy to outfit their new Headquarters. Located in the historic Watchtower building in Dumbo, the 200,000 square foot space is one of the largest projects ever to participate in the Living Building Challenge.

All of the nearly 50 pieces of furniture we built for Etsy were constructed with FSC-certified wood and finished with low or no VOC topcoats. This included everything from coffee and side tables scattered throughout the buildings 9 floors, to custom desks and credenzas built for the CEO and CFO.
